STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION FOR STAYING STRONG,
COORDINATED, AND BALANCED
What is Rolfing?
“We are looking for a way to evoke human potential to
establish greater physical and mental vitality.”
Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.
When Dr. Ida Rolf, Ph.D., first developed her innovative method of manual therapy more than 50 years ago, she called it structural integration (SI). Later it became called Rolfing SI. The genius of the work rests on her insight that the body is more at ease and functions more effectively when its structure is balanced in gravity. Dr. Rolf recognized that the body is inherently a system of seamless networks of tissues rather than a collection of separate parts. Rolfing SI systematically works on this weblike complex of connective tissues, through a manual approach and sensorimotor education to release, realign, and balance the whole body. Thus resolving discomfort, reducing compensations, and alleviating pain. Rolfing assists the body in finding a state of decompression, spaciousness, and coordination. The Rolfing process enables the body to regain the natural integrity of its form, thus enhancing your postural efficiency and freedom of movement. My Approach to Rolfing
Rolfing is the Zen of bodywork. It is a door to a deeper embodied experience for both the client and the practitioner. It is a journey toward connecting to the core. Rolfing is listening. It’s listening with my entire being to what’s happening for the client: to the biomechanical forces of membranes, ligaments, bones, and cavities. Listening to where the life force flows and glides and where it gets stuck. Rolfing helps your body to make adaptive, intelligent, and intuitive choices. Rolfing is about enhancing consciousness. Rolfers are like somatic detectives looking for the origin of imbalance, constrictions, and inefficient functioning.
As a Zen and Rolfing practitioner, my interests span the gamut from studying anatomy and physiology to investigating human consciousness to understanding how trauma affects the body-mind.
You’re probably wondering what “coyote” has to do with Rolfing? For me, it’s about freedom. As humans, with our remarkable imaginations, we get trapped in our stories and cut off from the Earth’s wisdom. Our world becomes linear and tight. Our bodies become entangled, incongruent, and maladaptive. We forget how to respond to the call of the wild.
